Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof engaged in a pivotal bilateral meeting with Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs, Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, at the Jakarta Convention Centre. The meeting highlighted the strengthening of ties between the two nations and their commitment to advancing regional cooperation. The discussions also aimed at exploring ways to address shared challenges and leverage opportunities for growth and sustainability in both countries.

The significant discussion focused on several key areas, including the enhancement of ASEAN relations and collaborative efforts in the energy and water sectors. The dialogue underscored a mutual interest in expanding cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia, particularly in the domains of energy supply and renewable energy.

“We are looking at how to broaden our cooperation, especially in energy transition and renewable energy. Our goal is to support each other and foster increased collaboration within the ASEAN region,” Fadillah stated to the media following the meeting.

The meeting with Minister Luhut was part of a broader agenda for Fadillah’s visit, which included another crucial bilateral discussion with Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia. The meeting focused on green energy development cooperation. Bahlil Lahadalia, with his extensive experience as former Minister of Investment and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board, is anticipated to greatly enhance discussions on green energy initiatives.

The bilateral engagements were conducted in the context of ISF 2024, a key forum for discussing sustainability and environmental issues, held from September 5 to 6. The forum provided an ideal platform for Fadillah and his delegation to engage with Indonesian counterparts, align on regional strategies, and foster partnerships that could have long-term impacts on both nations’ sustainability and energy goals.

In addition to the discussions on energy and water transformation, the meetings aimed to reinforce the strategic partnership between Malaysia and Indonesia. Both countries have recognised the importance of working together to achieve common goals in energy sustainability and environmental stewardship, which are critical to addressing global challenges such as climate change and resource management.

Fadillah’s visit to Jakarta and the bilateral meetings are part of Malaysia’s broader strategy to enhance regional collaboration and contribute to ASEAN’s collective efforts in achieving sustainable development. The interactions with Indonesian officials underscore a commitment to deepening economic ties and exploring new avenues for cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

The outcomes of these discussions are expected to pave the way for increased joint initiatives and projects, reflecting both nations’ dedication to advancing sustainable development and energy transformation. As Malaysia and Indonesia continue to strengthen their partnership, these engagements are likely to play a significant role in shaping the future of regional cooperation and addressing the challenges of the 21st century.

Malaysia’s commitment to sustainability and digital transformation is advancing through several key initiatives. Curtin University Malaysia has launched a Bachelor’s programme in Energy Engineering aligned with Sarawak’s development strategy.

Universiti Teknologi Swinburne Sarawak Campus is spearheading this movement with a new R&D centre focused on renewable energy and high-tech avionics. The centre will harness the region’s renewable energy resources and its growing role in satellite launches to develop advanced aerospace materials.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia is partnering on carbon reduction tech with a Singaporean firm. The smart meter project aims to install 9.1 million meters by 2026, enhancing energy efficiency and supporting Malaysia’s Smart City and Smart Nation goals.

All these domestic and regional initiatives mark significant steps in enhancing Malaysia-Indonesia relations, with a focus on energy transition, renewable energy, and regional collaboration. These discussions reflect both countries’ commitment to fostering sustainable growth and advancing their shared objectives within ASEAN.
