A complete O-RAN solution provider and the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited (ASTRI) collaborated with 5G industry leaders to deliver a live, 5G end-to-end demonstration of integrated small cells at a global technology event.
The demonstration leveraged key building blocks from a growing partner ecosystem which consists of:
- An integrated small cell hardware platform featuring a Dutch semiconductor manufacturing company’s Layerscape® Access LA1200 family of programmable baseband processors, along with its high-performance Arm®-based multicore communications processing platform (LX2160).
- The 5G RF Sub-6GHz RFIC (the MT3812) by a 5G communications and tech firm; each RFIC supports 2T2R and 100MHz system bandwidth.
- The O-RAN solution provider’s 5G Software for integrated small cells consisting of high-performance high PHY and low PHY software with Digital Front-End (DFE) and is powered by ASTRI 5G technologies.
- The commercial 5G Layer2/Layer3 protocol stack by a France-based engineering company.
- ASTRI’s high performance 5G Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) and 5G Core.
The 5G integrated small cell is configured as a 4T4R 100MHz system bandwidth solution and is attached with a commercial terminal running live data streaming traffic achieving over 1Gbps end-to-end throughput.
The complete O-RAN solution provider’s 5G integrated small cells support both indoor and outdoor deployments as well as FR1 and FR2 frequency bands. Integrated with 5G Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) and 5G Core from ASTRI, the O-RAN solution provider’s 5G solutions are highly cost competitive for new 5G use cases such as industrial internet of things (IoT), NR Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X), 5G mission-critical applications, etc.
The CEO of the O-RAN solution provider stated that they are pleased to continue its long-standing collaboration with all the 5G industry leaders to offer commercial ready, competitive and high performance 5G solutions. Their proven expertise in wireless communication systems and wireless baseband technologies could accelerate their partners’ marketing of 5G solutions.
The VP of Communications Technologies of ASTRI stated that the agency has participated in MWC Barcelona for about 10 years continuously to promote technologies with its partners and connect with the world for collaboration.
This year, they were delighted to join hands with their partners to showcase integrated and commercial ready 5G O-RAN small cell solutions, together with ASTRI’s 5G MEC and 5G Core solutions. “We will work closely with ecosystem partners to accelerate the commercialization of 5G technologies and enable a wider range of emerging applications such as smart cities, industrial IoT, C-V2X, AR/VR, etc,” the CEO said.
The O-RAN solution provider demonstrated the live end-to-end system of the 5G integrated small cells. Recent research found that the global 5G technology market was valued at US$5.13 billion in 2020, and is projected to reach US$797.80 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 65.8% from 2021 to 2030.
The COVID-19 outbreak had a positive impact on the 5G technology market as the dependency on a better network provider and faster internet speed has increased as most of the work has shifted to online platforms. Therefore, the need for 5G technology has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.
5G is a next-generation cellular technology that will provide high-speed reliable communication at ultra-low latency levels. 5G Technology covers the entire ecosystem of hardware, software and services that are critical for the implementation of 5G networks.
The 5G technology market includes 5G connectivity technologies such as enhanced mobile broadband, ultra-reliable low latency communications, and massive machine-type communications. 5G technology is expected to redefine communication, entertainment, and how people connect to the internet. 5G technology can operate in mm-wave bands i.e., within the high-frequency spectrum ranging from 24 to 100 GHz that facilitates faster data delivery.
