The President of the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) recently led a delegation to meet with the Deputy Secretary of the Shandong Provincial Committee and Secretary of the Qingdao Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC). This meeting resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at forging a robust technological collaboration.

The MoU solidified the establishment of the CityU-Qingdao Innovation Research Institute within Qingdao’s West Coast New Area. This strategic partnership is poised to amplify cooperation across cutting-edge domains such as new materials, new energy, biomedicine, marine science, and artificial intelligence (AI).

The signing ceremony saw the MoU formalised by the Associate Vice-President (Mainland Collaboration) at CityU, and the Deputy Secretary of the CPC Working Committee and Mayor of the Qingdao West Coast New Area. It encompasses the launch of unique “3+1+1” degree programs, the establishment of a robust postgraduate education platform, the development of significant scientific and technological infrastructure, the facilitation of joint research endeavours through shared laboratories and university-enterprise partnerships, and the exploration of a dedicated fund aimed at bolstering industrial advancements.

It was noted that CityU is dedicated to harnessing its technological expertise to foster enhanced collaboration in pivotal domains, including biomedicine, marine science, and human resource development. This commitment is intricately aligned with the specific developmental imperatives of Qingdao, ensuring a harmonious convergence of knowledge and innovation to drive progress in these vital sectors.

The Deputy Secretary of the Shandong Provincial Committee and Secretary of the Qingdao Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) recognised CityU’s esteemed status as a hub of talent and innovation. He asserted that the MoU would significantly enhance coordination in multidisciplinary domains, fostering deeper collaboration in cultivating high-end expertise, advancing key technologies, and fostering symbiotic ties among academia, industry, and research establishments.

An integral aspect of the collaboration involves the establishment of joint laboratories and university-enterprise partnerships to facilitate the practical application of research outcomes – an echo of HKSAR’s dedication to fostering a symbiotic relationship between academia and industry.

The CityU-Qingdao partnership stands as a testament to HKSAR’s commitment to embracing technological innovation as a cornerstone of progress. It embodies the spirit of forward-looking collaboration and resonates with the ethos driving HKSAR’s initiatives for sustained and robust economic and technological development.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and Qingdao’s West Coast New Area resonates strongly with the strategic technological initiatives set forth by the government. This collaboration underscores the alignment between CityU’s renowned capabilities and the government’s vision for fostering innovation-driven growth and cross-disciplinary advancement.

By establishing the CityU-Qingdao Innovation Research Institute and focusing on areas such as new materials, new energy, biomedicine, marine science, and artificial intelligence (AI), the MoU mirrors the government’s commitment to propelling cutting-edge research and technological applications that contribute to economic prosperity and sustainable development.

This partnership exemplifies the government’s proactive approach to leveraging academic prowess and collaborative synergy to fuel the advancement of high-priority sectors, strategically aligning educational and research efforts with the nation’s growth agenda.

By establishing joint laboratories and university-enterprise partnerships, this initiative catalyses the practical application of research outcomes, echoing the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government’s dedication to fostering symbiotic relationships that drive technological advancements and economic growth. The MoU thus serves as a beacon of innovation-driven collaboration, resonating with HKSAR’s visionary initiatives for a progressive and technologically vibrant future.
