New Solutions from HK Government Tech Lab

Two tech firms operating under the Hong Kong Smart Government Innovation Lab announced that they have launched new solutions which are now ready to be acquired by companies and institutions.

SOLUTION ONE – Smart Pedestrian Crossing Solution

Solution description

The many industrial areas in Hong Kong including Sham Shui Po, Lai Chi Kok, Sai Kung, and as well as Wanchai, have multiple high-risk pedestrian crossings. These areas are made even more dangerous by careless pedestrian and motorist behaviours.

The firm’s system will greatly enhance pedestrian’s safety and make it possible for both drivers and pedestrians to be more aware of the situation and provide sufficient alerts to each other. The system has proven on-the-road effectiveness in Italy and is now ready to be implemented in Hong Kong.

Application Areas

The solution was made to be applied in the areas of City Management, Law and Security as well as Transport.

Technologies Used

The solution uses the latest in Predictive Analytics, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Solar Panels with energy-saving and independent service assurance.

Use Case

Poorly illuminated areas, rash driver behaviour combined with pedestrians being increasingly inattentive to road crossings has caused thousands of accidents in the territory. The solution is extremely low cost and easy to set up, energy self-sufficient due to the use of solar panels and batteries. All road users can avail of its advantages.

SOLUTION TWO – IoT: Indoor Air Quality Management

Solution description

The firm has developed intelligent indoor air quality sensors that are simple and easy to deploy. Data is collected and transmitted to a cloud platform and analysed with the firm’s AI model, which has been trained and proven to deliver accurate predictions.

With the formula, the solution is able to calculate and present a real-time overall IAQ score on a scale of 1-100 in the software. The solution monitors the following five parameters: temperature, relative humidity, CO2, PM2.5 and TVOC.

Apart from the real-time overall IAQ score, each parameter’s actual data, quality index and optimal level are also displayed in the software. Users can track granular IAQ data by zone. Facilitated with a series of customized notifications, interpersonal energy training workshops and use of automation, the solution raises indoor air quality awareness and knowledge, hence drive behavioural change intelligently in communities.

The solution has been successfully applied in malls, schools, residence halls, offices and households and has gained support from the management board, tenants and occupants.

Application Areas

The solution was designed to be applied in the areas of City Management, Environment, Health as well as Housing.

Technologies Used

The solution employs Cloud Computing, Data Analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.

Use case

  • IAQ sensors are compliant with Green Building and WELL Building Standards, and are compact and easy to retrofit on existing panels
  • The user-friendly software platform was derived by 8000 users to enhance the awareness and understanding of indoor air quality and encourage behavioural change
  • Real-time and granular IAQ monitoring and notification to evaluate users’ IAQ performance and take prompt actions
  • Data analysis metrics by different parameters to deduce air quality improvement opportunities
  • IAQ comparison of different buildings/zones at customized period provide easy benchmarking in single glass of plain
  • Scalable and agile infrastructure which can expand with further integration with other smart sensors or controls
  • Use with Blue Sky air purifier to construct a healthy and productive indoor environment
  • The IAQ monitoring system maintains thermal comfort while simultaneously inhibiting the growth of bacteria and mould in the environment, which secures the well-being and health safety of building occupants.

About the Smart Government Innovation Lab

In 2018, the Government established the Smart Government Innovation Lab to explore hi-tech products such as AI and relevant technologies, including machine learning, big data analytics, cognitive systems and intelligent agent, as well as blockchain and robotics from firms, especially local start-ups.

The Lab is always on the lookout for innovation and technology (I&T) solutions that are conducive to enhancing public services or their operational effectiveness. I&T suppliers are encouraged to regularly visit the Lab’s website to check on the current business and operational needs in public service delivery and propose innovative solutions or product suggestions to address them.
