Taiwan Unveils Cutting-Edge Tech Innovations

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Taiwan’s ITRI ICT TechDay 2023 showcased the nation’s commitment to shaping the future of information and communication technologies. The event, which brought together an array of industrial giants, including the Taiwan Space Agency and Taiwan Information Security Center (TWISC), among others, showcased groundbreaking innovations across several key domains.

The ITRI ICT TechDay 2023, under the astute leadership of General Director Pang-An Ting from ITRI’s Information and Communications Research Laboratories, mirrored the ever-evolving landscape of the global ICT industry.

It offered a clear image of the regionalisation and localisation of ICT supply chains, highlighted predicted hardware sales restrictions, and emphasised the global goal of sustainability. In this dynamic climate, technologies that promote openness, intelligence, and environmental conscience have taken centre stage, sparking startup growth and infusing new life into Taiwan’s ICT economy.

One of the showstoppers of the event was the cutting-edge Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite Ground Communication Radio Frequency Subsystem. Employing self-developed array antenna RF chips and an ingenious beam tracking algorithm, this system has the remarkable capability to establish connections with LEO satellites within a mere second.

Its speed – 11 times faster than an F16 fighter jet – is an incredible feature. Taiwan’s ICT companies have independently conceived the LEO satellite ground equipment architecture and interface design, propelling them into the upper echelons of satellite manufacturers worldwide. This technological milestone holds the promise of a brighter future for satellite communication.

For road safety, the patented V2X See-Through technology takes the spotlight. It provides drivers with a unique perspective, allowing them to see through the vehicle ahead by fusing images seamlessly. The innovation integrates image recognition, image stitching technology, and V2X vehicle onboard communications through the 5.9 GHz ITS dedicated frequency band.

Enter Janus, a fully automated AI-powered solution that serves as the sentinel guarding Internet of Things (IoT) networks. Janus maximises security by establishing a behaviour baseline for network activities, implementing firewall rules, micro-segmenting networks, and continuously monitoring for deviations.

Healthcare institutions, smart factories, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure across Taiwan have already embraced Janus to bolster cybersecurity – a testament to the technology’s relevance and effectiveness.

The 5G O-RAN Micro-Cell Technology is an Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) micro-cell base station system equipped with core technologies including Massive MIMO technology and high radio power transmission.

Overcoming challenges related to heat dissipation, signal distortion, and beamforming, this technology caters to market demands for extensive coverage, high capacity, interoperability, and integration in both public infrastructure and private networks. The fact that this technology has been transferred to local companies for production, targeting the global market, is a testament to its exceptional potential.

Further, the FAST AI One-Stop System is a powerful tool designed to expedite enterprise AI applications without necessitating advanced programming skills. With intuitive drop-down menus, users can now complete data preparation, federated learning, and automated rapid modelling with ease. This system simplifies the process of building AI models, democratising access to the transformative power of artificial intelligence.

General Director Pang-An reiterated that the ITRI ICT TechDay 2023 showcased a vivid tapestry of innovations that promise to reshape the future of technology. From LEO satellites to IoT security and 5G connectivity, these groundbreaking solutions herald a new era of possibilities and pave the way for Taiwan’s ICT sector to shine brightly on the global stage.

He added that the event was a testament to the nation’s unwavering commitment to innovation, openness, intelligence, and sustainability, the very pillars that will support the growth of its ICT industry and empower future generations to reach greater heights.
