Thailand Safeguarding Progress in the Digital Age

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The digital economy of Thailand has undergone swift expansion, marked by a strong commitment to technological advancement. Despite the array of opportunities presented by these progressions, they have concurrently introduced a heightened susceptibility to cybersecurity concerns. Acknowledging this threat, the Thai Government has proactively initiated measures to confront and mitigate the implications of the cybersecurity dilemma.

Amidst this dynamic environment, the government has embarked on a multifaceted approach to enhance its cybersecurity posture. This approach entails comprehensive strategies, collaborations, and initiatives to bolster the nation’s resilience against cyber threats.

The Digital Government Development Agency Thailand CERTs Community (TH-CC) recently organised a communication meeting, fostering information and knowledge exchange among various CERTs (such as TB-CERT, DG-CERT, TCM-CERT, TTC-CERT, Thai-CERT, TCS-CERT, MOT-CERT, Health-CERT, Energy-CERT, PEA, and MOD CSIRT) in Thailand.

The meeting covered topics such as the announcement of the “Cyber Security Oversight Committee’s Criteria and Methods for Reporting Cyber Threats.

Furthermore, representatives from sectoral CERTs, including DG-CERT, TCS-CERT, MOT-CERT, Health-CERT, Energy-CERT, and MOD CSIRT, actively engaged in sharing their experiences in setting up their centres and discussing the challenges they faced. The meeting served as a platform for exchanging ideas on cybersecurity and collectively working towards enhancing the level of Sectoral CERT services centred around the theme.

In previous actions, Thailand also has taken significant strides in cyber defence, implementing a comprehensive strategy that includes legislating the Cybersecurity Act 2019. This legislation, which officially came into effect after being published in the Government Gazette on 27 May 2019, is designed to establish legal protections to ensure cyberspace security.

The Cybersecurity Act emphasises developing a robust cybersecurity risk assessment plan, which is pivotal in preemptively countering and mitigating potential cybersecurity threats. These threats encompass a broad spectrum, ranging from those that could jeopardise national security and public interest to those affecting the economy, healthcare, international relations, and various governmental functions.

The primary objective of the Cybersecurity Act itself is to safeguard Thailand’s national security systems by addressing cyber-related threats and criminal activities, encompassing information and communications originating from computer networks, telecommunications networks, or the internet. It emphasises securing government computer systems authority to government entities and officials to implement its provisions effectively.

Moreover, safeguarding personal data has garnered substantial global focus and emerged as a prominent concern. In response, Thailand has taken a significant step by introducing its inaugural comprehensive legislation, the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). This legislative framework ensures the protection and proper handling of personal data within the country.

Hence, the Government of Thailand stands firmly committed to fortifying its digital terrain. With a firm belief in the importance of cyber awareness, the Government actively fosters a culture that emphasises the significance of staying vigilant and well-informed about cybersecurity best practices. Through targeted initiatives and awareness campaigns, they strive to empower citizens and businesses with the knowledge and tools to protect themselves against cyber risks.

The Government of Thailand believes in the power of collaboration and partnerships to strengthen its cybersecurity resilience. Engaging with various stakeholders, including private sector entities, international organisations, and cybersecurity experts, they create a united front against cyber threats.

These collaborative efforts facilitate knowledge exchange, information sharing, and the development of joint strategies to tackle complex cyber challenges collectively.
