The Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) recently announced its participation in the Construction Innovation Expo 2019 (CIExpo), to be held from the 17th to 20th December 2019.

As a supporting organisation for the event, HKSTP led 26 Park companies to showcase their latest innovations and solutions in smart construction.

Senior executives from HKSTP will also contribute their insights on trends impacting the construction industry at the event’s plenary sessions – the International Conference on MiC (Modular Integrated Construction), and International Conference on DfMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly), Robotics and Automation.

The CIExpo is jointly organised by the Development Bureau of the HKSAR Government, the Centre of Science and Technology Industrial Development, Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China, and Hong Kong’s Construction Industry Council (CIC).

The event features a wide range of innovations for offsite construction, robotics and automation, digital solutions and advanced technologies and materials.

It provides a platform for knowledge sharing and business matching, with the vision of driving technology adoption in the construction industry.

The technological showcases at the HKSTP Pavilion underscore HKSTP’s commitment to building bridges between the construction industry and innovators who apply technology and new concepts to strengthen the efficiency of the construction value chain.

The participating Park companies demonstrate cross-disciplinary technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics (AIR), Internet of Things (IoT), cloud, blockchain, MiC and metamaterials that can be applied to architectural design, construction, site management, facility management and green building.

In addition, HKSTP will highlight the adoption of MiC for the construction of the InnoCell, Science Park’s first on-site accommodation, to cultivate smart living and a co-creation community.

On 18 December 2019, the Chief Project Development Officer of HKSTP will share his thoughts on “MiC Journey and Adoption for InnoCell” at the conference. The MiC effectively enhances building productivity and safety, construction quality and sustainability through applying DfMA, to enable manufacturing in an offsite prefabrication factory and transporting structures for onsite installation.

InnoCell will house about 500 bed-spaces with a flexible design and communal facilities for overseas and local talent and is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.

On 19 December 2019, the Associate Director, AIR Platform and Precision Engineering of HKSTP will lead a panel discussion on “Landing AI+Robotics into Construction Industry”, together with representatives from the respective solution providers and industry users. They will explore the development and adoption of construction robotics and automation systems.

According to another report, the Greater Bay Area will help Hong Kong cement its role as an international financial centre and more effectively help Chinese enterprises going global.

Analysts said Hong Kong will become an even more attractive fund-raising market for businesses in the area where the technology and innovation sector is growing at an unprecedented pace.

According to an earlier OpenGov Asia report, HKSTP’s smart living initiative, InnoCell, will provide local and overseas technology talent with suitable space for living and exchange.

Residents will live in fully furnished units that contain a work station, smart furniture, bathroom, kitchenettes, wall storage and custom cabinetry.

They will also be provided with other common facilities such as music and game rooms, a gym and laundry mart, as well as shared working space to facilitate their interaction and collaboration, creating an atmosphere favourable to the development of innovation and technology (I&T).

To further foster the development of the city’s I&T ecosystem, the Government supported the corporation to build the InnoCell. Construction started earlier this year and is slated for completion by the end of 2020.
