Vietnam successfully pilots 5G network

Earlier this week, MobiFone officially announced that it has successfully piloted a 5G mobile network in the four cities of Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, and Hai Phong.

MobiFone is run by the state-owned Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group.

The test results of the MobiFone 5G network have been satisfactory, with the download speed at approximately 2Gbps, a representative from MobiFone noted.

With this success, MobiFone is ready to implement a 5G mobile network and applications for customers.

MobiFone has also installed the first 5G broadcast stations in the four aforementioned cities.

On the 5G platform, super high-speed data services such as hologram-3D calls via a 5G mobile network, online games using super-high bandwidth like cloud gaming, and virtual interactive applications between people in two different positions, have been successfully tested.

The operator expressed its hope that these pilot services will not only bring about a revolution in the fields of entertainment, business, transportation, healthcare, and education but also serve as an important foundation for MobiFone to develop macroscopic solutions regarding building e-government and smart cities.

MobiFone is the second mobile operator in Vietnam approved by the Ministry of Information and Communications to pilot 5G technology.

Of 131 mobile network operators that are deploying 5G, three are in Vietnam. There are still no standards and official frequency for 5G in the world. It is expected that standards will be set up in 2020.

As OpenGov reported earlier, Viettel and Vingroup have stated they will commercialise 5G telecom devices this year.

At the ceremony where Viettel officially began trying 5G in May last year, the MIC’s Minister stressed that the trial of 5G in 2019 and commercial deployment in 2020 show that Vietnam won’t continue to be behind the world but will be abreast with developed countries.

Viettel’s 5G test must focus on finding out how to improve the quality of the network across the country.

One of the early applications of 5G is the smart factory, where new 5G technologies are being used. Viettel and other network operators should experiment soon to cover all high-tech parks, national innovation centres, and smart factories by 2020, the release concluded.

The country is making efforts to make digital transformation a key strategy to boost the national economy.

Furthermore, earlier this month, a press release announced that the United States-based technology giant Qualcomm, the largest global supplier of smartphone chips, launched its Hanoi office after over five years of presence in the country, showing its ambition to boost its footprint.

The Hanoi facility is one of the new moves the company was planning to take in Vietnam, where they expect to have more new orders for their services and products when 5G will be commercially launched, a representative said.

Qualcomm made the move following its recent study IHS Markit, which found that by 2035, 5G technologies will enable $13.2 trillion of global economic output and create 22 million new jobs globally. With a wide spectrum of feasible applications, 5G could bring about significant benefits for both people and economies.

To tap the growth potential, last year Qualcomm launched a second-generation 5G modem, the Snapdragon X55. To date, more than 85 commercial devices based on Snapdragon 7-series mobile platforms, more than 1,600 based on the 6-series, and more than 2,500 on 4-series platforms have been announced by global original equipment manufacturers. Together, these amount to over 4,000 designs.
