Big Data Driving Socioeconomic Growth in Thailand

Recently, Mr Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn, the Minister of Digital Economy and Society (DES), led a meeting with the BDi Big Data Institute. This gathering aims to emphasise the significance of leveraging big data in the public and private sectors to advance the country’s economic and social systems.

Big data refers to datasets characterised by sheer volume, velocity, and complexity, making them difficult to handle using traditional data-processing software. When effectively analysed and interpreted, these datasets often contain valuable information that can yield valuable insights, patterns, and trends.

During the meeting, several key objectives were identified to drive the effective utilisation of big data. Firstly, a strategic approach was discussed to harness the power of big data and leverage it to develop the economy and society. It involved exploring innovative ways to collect, analyse, and interpret large and complex datasets to gain valuable insights and drive informed decision-making.

Secondly, the focus was ensuring that government and private agencies incorporate big data into their operations. It included using big data to shape policy development, enhance service delivery, and optimise business planning. These entities can gain a competitive edge, drive efficiency, and make data-driven decisions through this stride.

Thirdly, the meeting underscored the importance of providing comprehensive extensive data analysis services to government and private agencies. It entails offering sophisticated analytical tools and methodologies to extract actionable intelligence from vast data repositories. By accessing these insights, decision-makers can gain a deeper understanding of various phenomena, identify trends, and make informed choices to address complex challenges.

Lastly, the meeting emphasised the need to foster innovation in big data. It encourages research and development initiatives, promotes collaborations between academia, industry, and government, and creates an environment that nurtures technological advancements in big data analytics. New methodologies, tools, and approaches can be devised to unlock the full potential of big data and drive transformative change through this step.

Thanakamanusorn believes that big data utilisation could revolutionise industries by improving decision-making processes and driving innovation in various sectors, including finance, healthcare, transportation, and more.

Thailand has long been committed to implementing big data initiatives. Recently, the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (Depa), operating under the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES), has been at the forefront of promoting the adoption of big data for national progress.

Under the auspices of the GBDi, numerous projects were streamlined, involving the collaboration of 67 state agencies. These projects covered a wide range of sectors and industries, contributing to the country’s overall development. The institute’s efforts were instrumental in creating platforms and frameworks that facilitated the effective use of big data, enabling agencies to harness its potential for informed decision-making and policy formulation.

The successful implementation of over 100 projects demonstrates the positive impact of utilising big data in various domains. By leveraging big data, Thailand has fostered an environment of innovation and progress, positioning itself as a leader in digital transformation and data-driven decision-making.

The ongoing commitment of the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (Depa) and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) signifies Thailand’s dedication to realising the full potential of big data. As the country continues to leverage big data analytics, it is poised to enhance its economic growth further, optimise public services, and drive innovation across sectors, ultimately contributing to the overall progress and well-being of the nation.

“We recognise the value of big data, as it is a new oil of the world, and we are fully committed to harnessing its potential to drive significant advancements and uplift our country,” reiterated Thanakamanusorn.
