The collaboration between the Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Hong Kong (Civil Engineering, HKU) and a global player in the engineering software market has been formalised through a Partnership Agreement.

This strategic alliance aims to propel higher education to new heights by combining the academic prowess of one of HKU’s oldest and most esteemed departments, Civil Engineering, with the technological innovation brought forth by the company, an international engineering software corporation.

The essence of this partnership lies in facilitating a robust learning environment for students within the Civil Engineering department, leveraging the firm’s cutting-edge engineering software. The collaboration goes beyond traditional educational boundaries, providing students with access to valuable hands-on experience that not only enhances their academic journey but also equips them for real-world applications in the field of engineering.

Professor Wei Pan, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, expressed the significance of the Partnership Agreement, emphasising the practical and meaningful learning approach it aims to establish. He believes that the knowledge and experience gained through this collaboration will not only advance students’ education but also contribute to their effectiveness in real-world scenarios.

Dr. Jeong, Suntae, President of the tech firm, conveyed his belief in the transformative power of technology, asserting that it is a tool for spreading happiness and improving the quality of life. He sees the collaboration as more than a business expansion, viewing it as a manifestation of the firm’s commitment to positively influencing both the educational and professional landscape in Hong Kong. Dr. Jeong envisions students from The University of Hong Kong, equipped with the company’s software skills, making global contributions that bring happiness through technology.

The Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Hong Kong, with a rich history spanning 111 years, has been a nurturing ground for brilliant leaders in civil engineering. Its contributions to both local and overseas communities, coupled with its international reputation in teaching and research, position it as a key player in the field. Currently boasting 30 teaching staff, approximately 402 undergraduate students, 539 postgraduate students, and a dedicated research team, the department offers versatile programs, including a fully accredited Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering, along with postgraduate options such as Master of Science in Engineering (Civil Engineering), Master of Philosophy (MPhil), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The undergraduate program holds accreditation from The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and the master’s program is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, UK. In addition, the department provides professional training courses for civil engineers and engineering graduates, reinforcing its commitment to holistic education.

The company specialises in the development of simulation software for science and technology. With over 700 professionals across the globe, the firm’s IT has established its presence in more than 110 countries, operating through 8 subsidiaries strategically located in key regions, including the United States, China, Japan, the UK, India, Russia, Dubai, and the Philippines, supported by a network spanning 28 countries.

The company excels in computer graphics-based engineering modelling, advanced analysis, optimisation design, and object simulation. Renowned for stability and economic analysis in various engineering sectors, the tech firm’s Family Program holds a top market position, particularly in construction-related fields.

The partnership marks a significant milestone in the realms of education and technology. This collaboration not only enriches the academic experience for students but also prepares them for successful careers by integrating cutting-edge engineering software into their learning journey. The fusion of academic excellence and technological innovation sets the stage for future contributions from students who will carry the torch of knowledge and technology into the global engineering landscape.
