5G Advancing Medical Services in Thailand

The 5G District in Chiang Mai Province became a pilot project using 5G technology established in Thailand to improve healthcare by integrating augmented reality in “Smart Ambulances”. The initiative pairs augmented reality (AR) Consulting Glasses to the 5G network so doctors can consult and treat patients in real-time .

Chiang Mai University’s Medical School and the Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital collaborated on a 5G Smart Health project. The system will improve the effectiveness of the telemedicine network serving hospitals in Chiang Mai and the surrounding regions. A total of 20 facilities will benefit from the system.

The NESDB’s Digital Economy and Society Development Fund Office funded the preliminary work. Management from the Office of the National Digital Economy and Society Commission (NESDB) visited and checked the project’s development with Somboon Mekphaiboonwattana, a Digital Technology and Communication Management expert.

The travel industry is the latest to benefit from a 5G pilot programme. National Digital Economy and Society Commission Secretary-General Puchphong Nodthaisong evaluated the “5G Use Case” experimental project at the Phuket Data Sandbox Platform. The platform is the backbone of a more extensive system for combining data from various sources to make sound judgements. The pilot project aims to leverage 5G technology to increase trust in the tourism industry’s decision-making using real-time data.

Additionally, Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) created the Foresight Centre. The centre’s goal during the next decade is to increase the prevalence of digital tools in the travel sector. The Foresight Centre will use the information gathered from this endeavour to analyse, synthesise, and develop policy recommendations for developing infrastructure, policy, strategy, and various promotional activities to boost digital age tourism and boost Thai GDP.

Several additional nations have announced their intentions to develop 5G infrastructure. The Smart ‘Lights-Out’ Factory 4.0 will be built by an Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) supplier in Batu Kawan, Penang, Malaysia. New 5G Advanced High-Speed Optical Signal Transmitter and Receiver Modules, known as Optical Modules, will be manufactured at the plant.

The company’s growth plan follows the government’s mandate for MIDA to accelerate the manufacturing sector’s digital transformation through cutting-edge 5G technology. The new facility will use the Lights-Out methodology to facilitate autonomous production, which involves digitising the material flow and establishing an utterly networked environment. A remote team of highly trained specialists will handle data administration, production planning, and quality control.

In 2023, introducing 5G technology was a significant step forward for China’s digital rural growth. The “Work Points” serve as a set of recommendations to create digital villages to improve national food security and reinforce the progress made in reducing poverty through digital means.

Other goals included achieving a 26.5% informatisation rate of agricultural production and surpassing 580 billion yuan in retail sales of farm products through e-commerce networks, 5G network availability in places outside of townships and qualified administrative villages.

Network operators in Vietnam will be able to progress 4G and 5G technologies thanks to an auction for frequencies in the 2300-2400 MHz waveband held by the Authority of Radio Frequency Management, MIC. Companies that successfully bid for radio frequencies in the 2300-2400 MHz waveband at auction can deploy networks employing either the IMT-Advanced (4G) or IMT-2020 (5G) standards, allowing them to offer next-generation mobile broadband services.

Earlier, the MIC gave licences to telecommunication companies allowing them to undertake 5G testing in 40 cities and provinces under central administration. In 2022, the MIC recommended that telcos keep exploring 5G applications, researching demand, and creating technical solutions to craft the most effective business plans for securing licences.
