Vietnam and the Republic of Korea (RoK) have deliberated on strategies to enhance collaboration in the field of information technology. A virtual meeting was held to discuss potential areas of collaboration by Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, Phan Tam, and RoK Deputy Minister of Science and ICT, Park Yun-kyu.
The two sides discussed streamlining the licensing processes for RoK’s exports of cybersecurity equipment to Vietnam, fostering RoK-ASEAN digital collaboration, and exchanging expertise on establishing and operating the GS certification system.
Both parties further emphasised their commitment to fostering mutual growth and cooperation in the field of information technology. They agreed to enhance exchange and collaboration by participating in bilateral events like the “Vietnam International Digital Week 2023” hosted in Hanoi and the “World IT Show 2024” organised in Seoul. Through these events, they aim to strengthen ties and explore opportunities for advancements in the IT sector.
In his statement to the press, Deputy Minister Park Yoon-kyu said the meeting’s outcomes would build upon the achievements of the ASEAN digital export promotion group. He spoke about the importance of fostering tangible exchanges and collaboration between the governments and businesses of RoK and Vietnam in the IT sector. The discussions and agreements reached during the meeting are expected to pave the way for more substantial and productive partnerships between the two countries moving forward.
Vietnam and RoK have organised several initiatives to promote the development and adoption of emerging technologies. The recent meeting is part of the implementation of the negotiation results of the digital export promotion group to the ASEAN market after the discussion between the deputy ministers on 9 June in Hanoi. Another event, CICON 2023, was held in June, for the two sides to engage in the smart city and blockchain industry. It facilitated the establishment of a network of businesses from the two countries.
It was suggested that Vietnam should adopt a comprehensive strategy of “Design Vietnam” to effectively implement solutions for urban planning, appearance design, and overall urban quality. This approach draws inspiration from how RoK successfully transformed Seoul into a smart city.
Later that month, the Vietnamese State Agency for Technology Innovation (SATI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology (KEIT) for strategic cooperation in advanced technology development.
The agreement is a component of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) and serves as a solution to bolster cooperation in technology, innovation, and green transformation. It aligns with Vietnam’s goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
Vietnam is actively promoting the study, trade, and transfer of new, high-tech technologies with partners while strengthening international cooperation in research and development, technology transfer, human resource training, and innovation. The partnership will further promote the flow of knowledge and joint research efforts. It will play a crucial role in enhancing the technological capacity and productivity of enterprises, as well as improving the quality and competitiveness of products in both countries.
An MoU was also signed between SATI and the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) to promote cooperation activities in technology connection, research and development, and innovation for businesses in the two nations, and to join the international innovation network.
