The Minister of Railways, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, had inaugurated the groundbreaking ‘StartUps for Railways’ policy, signalling Indian Railways’ monumental stride into innovation by engaging startups and diverse entities.
The ‘StartUps for Railways’ policy aims to harness the potential of innovative technologies developed by Indian Startups, MSMEs, Innovators, and Entrepreneurs, with a primary focus on enhancing operational efficiency and safety across the vast expanse of the Indian Railways network.
Under this pioneering initiative, innovators stand to receive grants of up to Rs. 1.5 Crore, with the provision of milestone-based payments on an equal sharing basis. This initiative marks a crucial turning point in the National Transporter’s approach to innovation, emphasising the integration of technology in operations, maintenance, and infrastructure development through collaborations with the burgeoning startup ecosystem.
Addressing the event, the minister underscored the significance of integrating technology into the Indian Railways framework, marking a culmination of longstanding discussions and laying the groundwork for today’s transformative initiative.
The platform has the potential to facilitate meaningful connections between startups and the Railways. The initiative will engage startups to address key problem statements provided by various divisions and field offices of the Railways, including issues such as rail fracture detection, track inspection automation, and improving passenger services through digital tools.
The Minister assured startups of Indian Railways’ support, offering a 50% capital grant, assured market access, scalability, and ecosystem support. The policy ensures transparent and objective procedures, from the submission of problem statements to prototype development, all conducted online within defined timelines. Additionally, it guarantees that Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) developed during the project will belong exclusively to the innovators.
The ‘StartUps for Railways’ policy embodies a decentralised approach, empowering divisional levels to expedite product development and mitigate delays. In a bid to encourage innovation, the Railway Ministry has already received around 160 problem statements, with 11 prioritised for the programme’s initial phase.
With the launch of the Indian Railway Innovation Portal, the Ministry has set a transparent, objective, and accessible platform for fostering collaborations and driving technological advancements to reshape the future of Indian Railways.
