CityUHK Launches Institute of Digital Medicine

Various academic, clinical, and industry entities gathered to commemorate the establishment of the CityUHK Institute of Digital Medicine (IDM) through the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK). This collaborative endeavour signifies a concerted effort to leverage technological advancements in the realm of digital medicine for the betterment of healthcare. Spearheaded by CityUHK, IDM aims to harness the interdisciplinary expertise of its partners to develop innovative solutions at the intersection of engineering, data science, and life sciences.

The academic and research partners of IDM encompass esteemed institutions such as the National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Tsinghua University, Southern Medical University, University of Exeter, UK, and the Oxford Suzhou Centre for Advanced Research (OSCAR). These partnerships underscore a commitment to leveraging cutting-edge research in data science, artificial intelligence (AI), and biomedical engineering to drive forward the frontier of digital healthcare.

CityUHK’s IDM also boasts collaborations with notable industry players and clinical entities, emphasising a holistic approach to digital health innovation. Through these partnerships, IDM aims to integrate technological solutions into clinical practice, thus enhancing patient care and outcomes.

The establishment of IDM and the subsequent MoU signing ceremony were attended by key stakeholders, including the Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, HKSAR Government; the Council Chairman of CityUHK; and the President of CityUHK. These leaders reiterated the significance of IDM in advancing Hong Kong’s position as a global hub for life and health technology, underscoring the university’s dedication to pioneering digital health solutions.

CityUHK’s IDM aligns with the government’s vision of fostering innovation in healthcare. By capitalising on partnerships with leading medical schools, research institutions, and industry stakeholders, IDM seeks to drive synergies in research and development, ultimately translating cutting-edge technologies into practical solutions that benefit society at large.

The President of CityUHK emphasised the University’s commitment to promoting innovation and excellence in research, particularly in the context of rapid technological advancements. He highlighted the intertwined nature of medicine and digital innovation, noting that digital medicine offers cost-efficient and sustainable solutions to healthcare challenges.

Through IDM, CityUHK aims to advance research into integrating life and health technologies, AI, and data science with medical science and public health, empowering healthcare professionals with advanced technologies.

Looking ahead, CityUHK is poised to identify opportunities for collaborative research and development, as well as the transformation and commercialisation of cutting-edge technology in life sciences. The President of CityUHK also underscored the university’s dedication to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, citing initiatives such as the HK Tech 300 program and the newly launched CityUHK Academy of Innovation. These initiatives aim to nurture talent and support startups in the biotech and health sectors, further solidifying CityUHK’s position as a hub for technological innovation in healthcare.
